About Now Explained

Hey! I'm Dhruv. As a tech enthusiast, I've become frustrated with how tech news is covered. Between clickbait headlines, sponsored content, non-stop ads, and hype cycles, it's nearly impossible to get a straight answer about what's actually happening in technology.

So I built Now Explained as a side project to fix that for myself and hopefully you too. I'd like to help people stay informed about technology without all the noise.

What Now Explained Does

Three times a week (M/W/F at 10 AM), Now Explained delivers one well-researched article explaining a trending tech topic. No ads. No sponsors.

Every article answers three questions:

  1. What happened? – The facts, with sources
  2. Why does it matter? – Context and implications
  3. What's next? – What to watch for

No speculation presented as fact.. Every article will cite 3+ reputable sources.

Sources

I'm currently monitoring:

  • Major news: Reuters, BBC Technology, MIT Tech Review
  • Tech press: Ars Technica, TechCrunch, The Verge, Wired
  • Primary sources: Company blogs, research papers, official announcements

My Process

  1. Watch for articles from trusted sources (RSS, push notifications, emails, API)
  2. Spot what's trending on all the platforms
  3. Research, fact-check, and note citations
  4. Write the explainer in simple language
  5. Publish and send to subscribers

Why No Ads or Sponsors?

Most newsletters monetize through:

  1. Ads - Incentivizes clicks over quality
  2. Sponsors - Creates conflicts of interest
  3. Paywalls - Limits who can access information

I don't want any of those incentives influencing what I write or how I explain things. Now Explained should stay focused on one thing: understanding what's happening in tech.

The Real Costs

I'm paying for this entirely out of my own pocket right now and I'll keep it alive as long as I can.

Running this newsletter costs about $50/month out of pocket:

If you find this useful and would like to help out, you can buy me a coffee to help me stay awake β˜•or support me on Ko-fi. Any amount helps cover infrastructure costs and keeps this project running.
(100% of donations go toward infrastructure costs. If this ever generates more than it costs to run, I'll be transparent about that too and maybe we can pick a charity together)

Donation Transparency

  • Current monthly supporters: 0 people
  • Monthly donations: $0/month
  • Coverage: 0% of costs

(I'll update this monthly so you know exactly where things stand.)

What's Next?

Short-term goals:

  • Reach 1,000 subscribers
  • Add one or two more topics other than technology that readers might be interested in

Long-term vision (honestly, not sure yet):

  • Add optional deep-dive format for complex topics
  • Build a searchable archive of past explainers
